EU urging U.S. to solidify climate funding

BRUSSELS, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- European Union finance ministers said Friday the U.S. government must solidify funding proposals for a worldwide agreement to deal with climate change.

Swedish Finance Minister Anders Borg was among those EU officials calling for increased U.S. involvement in the creation of a climate change agreement involving numerous countries worldwide, the EUobserver reported.

"We need stronger U.S. activity on the climate issue if we are going to move forward," Borg said.

"We have some countries that are very, very skeptical (of a global deal) and if we are going to make progress it can't only be Europe that is showing leadership," added Borg, whose country currently holds the presidency of the European Union.

The European Commission has proposed that richer nations provide money to poorer countries worldwide to help them limit carbon emissions after 2012.

The EUobserver said it has been estimated that nearly $161 billion is needed by the developing world to limit carbon emissions and adapt to climate change.
