BRAMPTON, Ontario, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A member of the so-called Toronto 18 was sentenced Friday to seven years in prison for his role in plotting terrorist attacks.
Somali-Canadian Ali Mohamed Dirie, who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges last week, was handed the sentence in a court in Brampton, Ontario, the Canwest News Service reported.
"Terrorist offenses strike at the heart of Canadian values and society," Judge Bruce Durno said in handing down the sentence.
Dirie, 26, a Canadian citizen born in Somalia, could be free in as little as one year, because the judge gave him double credit for the time he has spent in prison since his arrest, Canwest said.
Dirie was one of 18 Toronto-area men charged in 2006 in a plot to attack targets in southern Ontario to protest Canada's involvement in Afghanistan.
Four have so far pleaded guilty or been convicted at trial.
