Stanford hospitalized after prison fight

HOUSTON, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. billionaire financier R. Allen Stanford, jailed for allegedly running a massive Ponzi scheme, has been hospitalized after a prison fight, authorities said.

U.S. Marshals Service officials said the fight happened at a Conroe, Texas, detention facility on Thursday but released few details of the altercation, The Houston Chronicle reported.

Marshals Service spokesman Alfredo Perez said Stanford's injuries were not life-threatening, adding, "I believe he's still in the medical facility being examined. I'm assuming he's probably going to be there overnight."

One of Stanford's attorneys, Kent Schaffer, told the Chronicle: "We're trying to find out what's going on. I don't really know all the facts."

Stanford, 59, a Texas native, faces 21 counts of conspiracy over what prosecutors say was a $7 billion Ponzi scheme involving certificates of deposit issued by a bank in the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda. He has been jailed since a judge denied him bail on the grounds he could be a flight risk, the newspaper said.
