WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., was released from a Washington-area hospital Thursday where he was admitted after falling in his home, his office said.

Byrd, 91, the longest-serving senator in U.S. history, was treated with antibiotics after exhibiting early signs of an infection and will continue his convalescence at his home in northern Virginia, CQ Politics reported.

The senior senator from West Virginia said he was "looking forward to engaging in the upcoming debate and votes on healthcare reform -- one of the most critical issues facing this Congress," his office said.
