GOP raises more funds than Dems in August

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Republican campaign committees in the U.S. Congress brought in more money than their Democratic counterparts in August, federal records indicated.

Republicans also were ahead of Democrats in the amount of cash on hand as well, as both parties prepare for the 2010 midterm elections in which more than three dozen competitive House and Senate seats are up for re-election, USA Today reported Thursday.

"Republicans have been able to tap into some of the anger against Democrats in power and translate that into fundraising," said Nathan Gonzales of The Rothenberg Political Report. "There are a lot of Republicans who wish the election were this November, not November 2010, because they feel like the momentum is on their side now."

In the Senate, the Republican fundraising committee collected $3.1 million last month, compared to $2.2 million by the Democratic committee, Federal Elections Commission documents indicated.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised $3.3 million in August, $200,000 more than the GOP Congressional Campaign Committee, FEC records showed.

The Republican National Committee reported to the commission it raised $7.9 million last month, $1 million more than the Democratic National Committee reported.
