BRANDON, Manitoba, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Canadian police are dismantling a secret "fight club" of teenagers and young men who voluntarily beat up one another in Brandon, Manitoba, officials say.

The Brandon Beat Club apparently operated for several months and organized fights along the lines of the Ultimate Fighting Championship that were videotaped and uploaded to the Internet, the Globe and Mail reported Tuesday.

Police, aware of a growing number of young men showing up at the hospital with injuries, got their break when a 19-year-old man badly injured in a Sept. 4 fight changed his story of being attacked and admitted to engaging in a fight.

He said he drank several beers before going into the ring surrounded by some 50 spectators, the report said.

Police charged him Monday with public mischief for initially lying about his injuries.

Meanwhile, investigators arranged for the Internet YouTube site to remove videos of the fights and the club's Web site was also shut down.

Because the fighters participated voluntarily, police were expected to file charges under a law from 1881 that deals with bare-knuckle matches that carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $5,000 fine, the Globe said.
