Ex-postal worker admits stealing DVDs

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A former U.S. Postal Service worker admitted he stole more than 3,000 Netflix DVDs that had been mailed to the USPS Springfield, Mass., branch.

Myles Weathers, a former Springfield resident who now lives in New York, pleaded guilty to stealing the DVDs between January 2007 and January 2008, the Springfield (Mass.) Union News reported.

Netflix, which rents DVDs to customers, told postal officials it became suspicious because of the number of DVDs that had disappeared from the Springfield area, said Michelle L. Dineen Jerrett, an assistant U.S. attorney. At one point, as many as 50 to 100 DVDs went missing each week, Jerrett said.

The Office of the Inspector General's investigation focused on the night shift at the Springfield branch, and then on Weathers, the prosecutor told U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor.

Weathers was arrested Feb. 22, 2008, after investigators filmed him taking DVDs from packages and putting them into his backpack, Jerrett said.

Ponsor said Weathers faces 10 to 16 months in prison and $38,000 in restitution. He could have received a stiffer sentence had he not pleaded guilty, the judge said.
