RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Friends say former U.S. Sen. John Edwards is considering acknowledging he is the father of a 19-month-old girl born to his alleged mistress.
They told The New York Times that Elizabeth Edwards, who has been battling cancer, is opposed to that. One friend said she has "yet to be brought 'round."
The scandal, which came out after Edwards dropped his presidential bid in 2008, appears to have ended his political career. Rielle Hunter testified Aug. 6 before a grand jury in Raleigh investigating whether any campaign financing laws were violated by payoffs given to her by Edwards supporters.
Edwards has acknowledged having had a sexual relationship with Hunter while denying fathering her child.
Hunter is said to be considering moving to Wilmington, N.C., near the island where the Edwards family has a summer home.
