U.N.: Poor not feeling recovery

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A U.N. report warns global economic turmoil is still pushing millions into poverty, saying "green shoots" of recovery are not reaching the poor.

The report, titled "Voices of the Vulnerable: the Economic Crisis from the Ground," contends the poor in the developing world continue to suffer disproportionately from the global recession. The report indicates 100 million more people are now below the poverty line and 61 million people have been added to the ranks of the unemployed in the last two years.

"The 'near poor' are becoming the 'new poor,'" U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro said in a statement Friday. "Workers in both the formal and informal sectors are being badly hit, particularly in manufacturing, commerce and construction."

Migiro said migrants working overseas will be remitting 7 percent less to their families in developing countries this year.

"Youth unemployment is dramatically increasing," Migiro said. "The number of unemployed youth has increased by as many as 18.2 million over the last year."
