Mob informant: Gotti paid crooked cops

NEW YORK, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A mob informant says a storied New York police detective who became the subject of a movie gave information to the late John Gotti.

John Alite, who is expected to testify next week against John Gotti Jr., the son of "Dapper Don" John Gotti, named 10 other police officers he said were on the take, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Bo Dietl, who retired in 1985 and now runs a detective agency, denied Alite's claims. Alite said Dietl received payments from the elderly Gotti's brother, Richard, into the late 1980s and passed on information about police cases.

"On the job or retired, I never took a dime from anyone," Dietl said. "I was not some corrupt cop."

Alite's charges were made in a five-page FBI report leaked to the media this week.

Dietl's career inspired a movie, "One Tough Cop," starring Stephen Baldwin. Since his retirement, Dietl has become known through appearances on Don Imus's radio show and on cable television.
