CHONGQING, China, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A severe drought has led to a shortage of drinking water for 1.5 million people in south and central China, a government spokesman said.
Of these, more than 1.02 million are in Hunan, where more than 1,120 reservoirs and 2,100 creeks and rivers ran dry, and a half-million are in Chongqing, officials said.
The drought over the past month also has damaged 22 million acres of crops around the city of Chongqing, said Wen Tianping, a government spokesman.
Government officials are attempting to induce precipitation. The Hunan Meteorological Bureau said 2,335 cloud-seeding rockets have been used since August to try to increase the chance of rain.
