DNA shows slain man Indonesian terrorist

JAKARTA, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- DNA evidence confirms Noordin Mohammad Top, Indonesia's most-wanted terror suspect, has been slain in Malaysia, authorities say.

Nanan Soekarna, an Indonesian national police representative, told CNN Saturday there's no doubt a man killed in a raid in Malaysia's central Java this week is Noordin, whom police say was involved in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombing, as well as suicide attacks on Jakarta hotels and the bombing of the Australian embassy.

"We have matched this Malaysian man's DNA against his family and it's 100 percent match," Soekarna said, adding that arrangements were being made to transfer the body back to Indonesia.

CNN said anti-terror police learned of Noordin's location Wednesday after interrogating two other suspects, which triggered a midnight raid in the Kepok Sari neighborhood of Surakarta in central Java. A five-hour standoff reportedly ended in a firefight in which Noordin was slain.

Indonesian authorities also initially claimed last month that Noordin was killed in a Malaysian battle last month, but forensic evidence indicated the slain man was someone else.
