BEIJING, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Leaders pledged Friday to encourage internal democracy in the Communist Party of China to maintain the party's cohesiveness.
The Central Committee announced its plans after a four-day closed-door meeting, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported.
The party is preparing for the anniversary in October of the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
Two years ago, Hu Jintao, who is both president of the country and general secretary of the Central Committee, has endorsed greater democracy, calling for more openness in a speech to the 2007 Party Congress.
"The realization of intra-Party democracy must rely on the guarantee of all Party members' democratic rights to know, to participate, to vote and to supervise all internal affairs of the Party," he said several months ago.
The party has about 76 million members of a total population of 1.35 billion.
