Pan Am bomber releases appeal documents

TRIPOLI, Libya, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The Libyan spy convicted of blowing up Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland published papers Friday he says would have secured his release on appeal.

Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, recently returned to Libya on compassionate grounds because he has terminal cancer, said the 300-page file challenges key arguments of the case against him, The Times of London reported.

The Guardian said the papers were published on the Internet.

Among other things, he argued that prosecutors presented insufficient evidence to prove the date of certain clothing purchases, and he questioned a prosecutors' claim that the bomb was planted at an airport in Malta.

"I have returned to Tripoli with my unjust conviction still in place," al-Megrahi said in a statement. "As a result of the abandonment of my appeal, I have been deprived of the opportunity to clear my name through the formal appeal process. I have vowed to continue my attempts to clear my name."

To secure his release on compassionate grounds, al-Megrahi had to end all court activity on his conviction of blowing up the airplane over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988 and killing 270 people aboard the airliner and on the ground.

His release prompted sharp criticism from world leaders and the families of the victims.
