3 family members die in N.Z. car crash

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- An English man apparently fell asleep while driving and crashed in New Zealand, killing his wife, cousin, and 3-year-old granddaughter, police said.

Michael "Geoff" Eades, 63, who suffered minor injuries, was "absolutely devastated" about the deaths caused when his car hit a utility pole Wednesday.

Eades granddaughter, Iva Harper, 3, his wife, Sera Eades, 60, and his cousin, Valerie Bryan, 68, may have been asleep when they died in the crash, the New Zealand Herald reported.

John McCombe, Eades' brother, said Eades was "inconsolable at the fact he was driving when his wife and cousin and granddaughter were killed."

Charges of careless driving causing death might be filed, said Christchurch police detective sergeant Andrew Fabish.
