Newborn found abandoned in storm drain

DECATUR, Ga., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Police in DeKalb County, Ga., say they have arrested an 18-year-old woman whose newborn son was found abandoned in a storm drain Thursday.

DeKalb County police spokesman Jason Gagnon said the mother, whose identity was not released, confessed at a hospital early Thursday that she had given birth and abandoned her child in a garbage dumpster at an area gas station, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Gagnon said after a search of the dumpster proved fruitless, police interviewed the woman's 19-year-old boyfriend, Landis Stewart-Moore, who led officers to the infant, who he allegedly had placed in an area storm drain.

The infant was breathing on his own and he was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

"It's looking like the child will be fine," Gagnon said. "Luckily, we located him before any more rain hit."

The Journal-Constitution said Stewart-Moore has been charged with first-degree child cruelty, a charge the infant's mother will likely face once released from the hospital where she is undergoing treatment.
