ATLANTA, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- A camp site used by convicted killer Gary Hilton has been found in the Chattahoochee National Forest, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday.
Investigators said a hunter stumbled on camping supplies, clothing and books last Friday, WSB-TV in Atlanta reported. The finder assumed the items had been discarded and thought they might be stolen.
Hilton pleaded guilty on Jan. 31, 2008, to killing Meredith Emerson, 24, of Buford, Ga., who disappeared while hiking in the Chattahoochee in late December 2007. After his arrest, he led investigators to her body on Blood Mountain.
While Hilton is serving a life sentence in Georgia, he is also expected to go on trial in Florida on charges of killing Cheryl Dunlap of Tallahassee, Fla. Dunlap's body was found on Dec. 19, 2007, in the Apalachicola National Forest in Florida. Like Emerson, she was decapitated.
Hilton is also a suspect in the killings of an Irene and John Bryant, who were in their 80s when they disappeared on a hike in the Pisgah National Forest near Asheville, N.C.
The items found at Hilton's camp site have been transferred to Florida so investigators there can look for evidence. The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation has also been alerted about the find, the GBI said.
