LUCASVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Lawyers for convicted killer Romell Broom say they are preparing a fresh round of appeals after an attempted execution of their client failed in Ohio.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer repprted Thursday while Broom's attorneys prepare their appeals, observers have questioned the morality and constitutionality of having the 52-year-old face another execution attempt.
"The system used to carry out executions has been shown to be faulty and dangerous," American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio lawyer Carrie Davis said in a statement. "Given these troubling facts, it would be irresponsible to continue the execution only one week later."
Broom received a week stay of execution from Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland after an execution team was unable to find one of Broom's veins for use in his lethal injection execution.
Broom was convicted of kidnapping, raping and killing a 14-year-old girl in East Cleveland in 1984.
State prisons spokeswoman Julie Walburn told The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch a review was under way into alternative lethal injection access points.
"We have absolute confidence in the execution team. We don't believe it (the failed attempt) reflects on their skills and ability," Walburn said.
