China arrests Uighur 'terrorists'

URUMQI, China, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- An alleged terrorist gang has been captured in northwestern China's ethnic Uighur region, officials said Wednesday.

Police in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region said the six suspected gang members had large quantities of bomb making tools and materials in their possession, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

Authorities didn't reveal when the suspects were arrested, but did say their initial investigation indicated the alleged terrorists had manufactured more than 20 explosive devices at three locations in the suburbs of Aksu city in Xinjiang after the July 5 anti-government riots in the regional capital Urumqi, in which nearly 200 people died.

Xinhua said authorities allege the suspects planned to use the bombs to carry out terror attacks in the region.
