Boy wounded in shooting near school

ANTIOCH, Calif., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A teenage boy shot several times Wednesday near a high school in Antioch, Calif., was in stable condition after surgery, authorities said.

The boy and two companions were walking about 8:30 a.m. when a car pulled up next to them with loud music blasting from the speakers. The boys on foot argued with the two young men in the car and three to five shots were fired. The boy, whose name was not released, was struck in the chest and arm, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The men in the car drove off.

The boy was taken by medical helicopter from the school's football field to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. He is believed to be a junior at Deer Valley High School, police Lt. Leonard Orman said.

Police were looking for a gold or gray compact sedan between five and 10 years old. The shooter was described to police as between 18 and 20 years old with dark, wavy hair combed straight back and is not a Deer Valley student.

The Antioch school district was temporarily locked down, but police said they think the shooting was random.
