KAMPALA, Uganda, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Scores of detainees have been charged in connection with last week's anti-government riots in Uganda that left 14 people dead, police say.
Kampala police spokeswoman Judith Nabakoba said 153 of the more than 600 people originally arrested would be detained in prison until next week when bail hearings will be held, Radio France Internationale reported Tuesday.
"The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges ranging from rioting, holding unlawful assembly and threatening violence," Nabakoba told RFI.
The arrests came after two days of violent protests against a government move last Thursday to bar a local ruler, King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II of Uganda's most populous ethnic group, the Baganda, from visiting an area near Kampala, where the national government feared rioting would break out.
The French broadcaster said President Yoweri Museveni would address Parliament on the situation.
