WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Support of U.S. citizens for the war in Afghanistan is at an all-time low of 39 percent, a CNN poll released Tuesday indicates.
While only 39 percent of respondents favored the war, 58 percent opposed the mission to Afghanistan, the CNN-Opinion Research Corp. poll results showed.
The 39 percent level of support is down from 53 percent in April, marking the lowest level of support since the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, CNN said.
Broken down by political affiliation, poll results indicate 23 percent of Democrats support the war, compared to 39 percent of independents and 62 percent of Republicans.
"Most of the recent erosion in support has come from within the GOP," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Unlike Democrats and independents, Republicans still favor the war, but their support has slipped 8 points in just two weeks."
The CNN-Opinion Research Corp. telephone poll contacted 1,012 adults Friday through Sunday. The margin of error was 3 percentage points.
