Biden Baghdad visit rocked by attack

BAGHDAD, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad came under an errant mortar attack Tuesday just as Vice President Joe Biden was paying a surprise visit, officials said.

The New York Times said it was unclear if Biden was in the embassy building when the attack came. However, CNN said a pool report from reporters traveling with the vice president heard the blasts, but saw no damage and Biden was not injured.

CNN said a U.S. military spokesman could confirm only one round landing, and even that did not land in the protected Green Zone where the embassy is located.

The Times said it was told by a Western security adviser the first two mortar rounds hit an apartment complex across the street from the embassy, and emergency crews were seen heading toward the complex.

The U.S. Embassy has come under repeated mortar attacks in the past, but the attacks have dropped off this year, CNN said.
