Winds delay SoCal wildfire containment

LA CANADA, Calif., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Fire commanders say winds last week mean the massive Station wildfire near Los Angeles will not be 100-percent contained until Saturday.

Officials had hoped to surround the 160,500-acre blaze by Tuesday; however, recent winds prevented crews from starting planned backfires that would have extended the fire lines.

The Los Angeles Times said Monday that the commanders remained confident they had a handle on the blaze and were sending some firefighters back to their home bases.

The Station fire continues burning in the Angeles National Forest and was 87-percent contained Monday. It is considered an arson fire and cost the lives of two firefighters.
