Suspect charged 34 years after murder

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles man has been charged with a 34-year-old rape and murder based on DNA evidence he provided when arrested on a drug charge, prosecutors say.

Police took a DNA swab from the man that linked him to the 1975 rape and strangulation of 80-year-old Alice Lewis in her Venice, Calif., home, Eva Stodel, a deputy district attorney for Los Angeles County, told the Los Angeles Times.

The suspect, who was 16 at the time of the slaying, is charged with murder during a rape and burglary.

The name of the man, now 50, was withheld because he was a juvenile at the time of the crime. Prosecutors have asked a juvenile judge to determine he is unfit to be tried as a juvenile so he can be charged as an adult.

The suspect was being held without bail.
