Real IRA attacks police officer's family

LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A dissident Republican group has claimed responsibility for attacks Friday on the family of a Catholic police officer in Northern Ireland, investigators said.

A bomb went off in Londonderry under a car belonging to the officer's parents, the Belfast Telegraph reported. No one was injured but the car was destroyed.

A few hours later, at 7:30 a.m. and two miles away, a bomb was discovered under his sister's car. Police evacuated several families from the area while the bomb was defused.

Stephen Martin, chief superintendent of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said he had spoken to the officer who had said he would not be "deflected" by the attacks.

In another incident Friday in Londonderry, a man was shot in both legs and his left hand. The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for what appears to be an attack meant as a punishment.

"The terrorist criminals came in the darkness of night. There is no comparison with the actions of the police officers serving the community," Martin said at a news conference. "We listen to the problems that the people of this city bring to us. We know what they want us to do."
