Police shoot alleged serial burglar

PLUMSTEAD, Pa., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A man suspected of a series of burglaries and car thefts in a Philadelphia suburb was shot dead by a police officer after a brief chase, authorities said.

David Zellis, first assistant district attorney in Bucks County, Pa., said the man, identified as Jonathan Mitchell Fineman, 45, had reportedly stolen a handgun during a recent burglary, WPVI-TV, Philadelphia, reported. Zellis said area residents were living in fear.

When police spotted Fineman Friday, allegedly driving a stolen car, he took off, then drove into two police cars and tried to escape on foot, investigators said.

"The suspect apparently turned and grabbed something from his waistband, turned toward the police officer and the police officer apparently fired one shot, which ultimately killed the suspect," Zellis said.

The suspect turned out to be carrying a pair of large scissors, which he was pulling from his waistband when he was killed, police said.

Fineman had no known address and was believed to be living in a stolen car.

The two police officers involved were not seriously hurt. They have been put on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
