LAS VEGAS, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A Jewish organization in Las Vegas says the poor economy has forced the closing of its newspaper, the Jewish Reporter.
The free newspaper, published by the United Jewish Community/Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, had a press run of about 17,000, the Las Vegas Sun reported. The newspaper typically came out once or twice a month.
"The Jewish Reporter was an important institution for our community," said Elliot B. Karp, the federation CEO. "The newspaper has served us well and we're proud of it. But we're enthusiastically looking to a new era of communicating and maintaining contact with our community."
The newspaper, published for the last 33 years, combined news of the local Jewish community with discussions of national and international issues of interest to Jews in Nevada.
Karp said donations to the federation are down.
"We had to reevaluate our priorities," he said. "Are the dollars that went to publishing the Reporter better used to help people? The answer to that was, 'yes.'"
