HONOLULU, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Thieves broke into Hale Kula Elementary School on an army post in Honolulu and took handmade ukuleles used by students, an administrator said Thursday.
The Honolulu Star Bulletin reported the break-in at the school located at Schofield Barracks Army Installation occurred after the Labor Day evening. The burglars also stole approximately $10,000 worth of technology equipment and a bag of pennies collected by students to donate to children afflicted with leukemia.
"We have this false sense of security because we're on a military base, but that's not necessarily so," Agnes Leinau, the school's vice principal said.
Leinau said the army post will increase its night patrol in response to the burglary.
The ukuleles are clearly marked with the school's name, which should make it harder for the thieves to sell them off, Leinau said.
"I certainly hope we get some back. ... I just think it's a really sad, sad case when the thieves have to prey on children, and they should be very ashamed of themselves," Leinau said.
