Abducted girl reappears after 18 years in California

BRENTWOOD, Calif., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Police officer Allison Jacobs said she was humbled by a celebration in her honor in Brentwood, Calif., for her role in the rescue of Jaycee Dugard.

The Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported Wednesday the University of California-Berkeley police officer received a symbolic key to the city Tuesday at Brentwood City Hall for helping discover Dugard had been held a sexual prisoner for 18 years.

"I'm completely humbled and honored for what I feel was me just doing my job," Jacobs, 33, said Tuesday night.

Jacobs contacted the probation officer of Phillip Garrido after the suspected kidnapper and his daughters visited her university two weeks ago to discuss an event permit, the Times said.

Jacobs said she was suspicious about Garrido's two daughters, ages 11 and 15, who authorities allege Garrido fathered with Dugard during her years of captivity.

"They were so robotic and not like girls of 11 and 15," Jacobs said. "If it wasn't for them, I would have just talked to him and that would have been it."

Garrido and his wife Nancy were arrested Aug. 26 on charges they abducted a then-11-year-old Dugard in 1991 and held her captive until last month. Dugard has since being reunited with her family.
