Sotomayor formally seated on Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Judge Sonia Sotomayor was seated formally Tuesday as the new associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the judicial oath to Sotomayor during the eight-minute ceremony in the courtroom. Sotomayor was sworn in officially in August so she could begin working on this term's cases.

After the judicial oath was administered, Sotomayor was escorted to her seat to the far right of the bench, next to Justice Stephen Breyer.

"We wish you a long and happy career on our common calling," Roberts said.

"Thank you," Sotomayor replied.

Attending the ceremony were Sotomayor's relatives, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Sotomayor, the court's 111th justice, third woman and first Hispanic, was confirmed this summer in a 68-31 vote in the U.S. Senate.
