Man charged with cutting up roommate

DETROIT, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A judge set bail at $200,000 Tuesday for a Detroit man who allegedly cut up his roommate's body, set the pieces on fire and then stored them in a freezer.

While Darryl Lewis, 41, is charged with mutilating a corpse, Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor David Braxton said he could face more serious charges once investigators determine how his 58-year-old roommate died, the Detroit Free Press reported. Braxton said he also feared Lewis might harm the person who reported the presence of the mutilated body to police.

Lewis faces up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted on the corpse mutilation charge plus additional time as a habitual offender.

The victim's name had not yet been released Tuesday afternoon. Braxton said the medical examiner was still trying to confirm his identity.

Lewis entered a plea of not guilty, telling Magistrate Donald Barthwell quietly that he understands the charges, the newspaper said.
