Fuel tankers set fire in Pakistan

QUETTA, Pakistan, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Masked gunmen attacked a convoy of fuel tankers heading from Pakistan to NATO forces in Afghanistan Tuesday, destroying eight of them, police said.

Five other tankers caught fire but were extinguished, Dawn reported.

No injuries were reported because the drivers and crew abandoned their vehicles soon after coming under fire from the four gunmen, the English-language Pakistani newspaper reported.

Sources said the attack occurred near Quetta, not far from the Western Bypass, as the convoy was on its way to Chaman.

No group had claimed responsibility for the attack, Dawn said.

Last week, 18 oil tankers and cargo trailers were destroyed near Chaman.

About 80 percent of the supplies used by NATO and U.S. forces pass through Pakistan's northwest tribal region where Taliban militants are entrenched.
