Former contractors plead to bribery

NEW YORK, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Two former contractors pleaded guilty Thursday to accepting bribes on U.S. Defense Department contracts, the Justice Department said.

The charges and pleas are part of an ongoing investigation into the moving and storage of military household items between New York and New Jersey and military installations in other states or overseas, the Justice Department said in a news release.

Charges filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in New York said, Darryl Jay Johnson and Henry Maldonado sought and got cash and valuables from companies working with the Ft. Hamilton Transportation Office from September 2003 until September 2008. In exchange, the two exerted influence when contracts were awarded, the department said.

The former inspectors pleaded guilty to one count each of bribery, the department said.
