GEORGETOWN, Del., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A 22-year-old man suspected of killing a Delaware police officer was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder.
Derrick J. Powell of Cumberland, Md., was arrested Tuesday night, shortly after Georgetown Police Officer Chad Spicer was shot. Police were searching for a second man, Christopher Reeves of Lincoln, Del., the Sussex Countian reported.
Spicer was the first Delaware police officer to be shot in the line of duty in 37 years. Two state troopers were shot and killed in 1972.
The shooting occurred after Spicer and another officer, Cpl. Shawn Brittingham, responded to a call at a McDonald's. Brittingham was wounded but not seriously hurt.
Investigators said Powell attempted to throw off pursuit by entering a private home. He was also charged with burglary.
