Homeless on Sacramento lot asked to move

SACRAMENTO, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Homeless people living on a vacant downtown Sacramento lot were issued citations Wednesday to get them to move along, police said.

Sacramento police spokeswoman Laura Peck said the nearly 30 homeless people had been asked to relocate previously and police were hopeful they would leave voluntarily following the use of citations, The Sacramento Bee reported.

"The individuals out here have been contacted multiple times in the past two weeks and they have been informed they are in violation of the Sacramento city camping ordinance," Peck said.

In an attempt to help the homeless to relocate to a new location, police were providing containers for them to carry their possessions, the Bee said.

Sacramento attorney Mark Merin, who owns the vacant lot, had been leasing the property to an advocacy group that wants a local site where homeless people can live legally.
