KEY BISCAYNE, Fla., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A Florida couple is asking a court to lower the damages awarded to a Peruvian woman hired as a nanny for their son.
Patricia Perales and her husband, Javier Hoyle of Key Biscayne were found guilty of various civil charges for their treatment of Alejandra Ramos and ordered to pay Ramos and the woman who replaced her $125,000, El Nuevo Herald reported Wednesday.
Ramos told the newspaper she slept in a closet at the couple's condominium and was made to work long hours cooking and cleaning in addition to her nanny duties.
Ramos said she was paid only $500 a month and was not given the health insurance the couple had promised her.
In addition to civil charges, a federal court jury in Miami found Perales and Hoyle guilty of human smuggling for taking away the passports of Ramos and her replacement, Maria Onela Maco Castro.
