Balkans tribunal gets three new judges

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Three new permanent judges were sworn in Wednesday for the U.N. Balkans war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands.

Guy Delvoie of Belgium, Howard Morrison of Britain and Burton Hall of the Bahamas were sworn in during the ceremony after being appointed by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon earlier this year, the United Nations said in a news release.

The three judges will serve either until the end of 2010 or earlier if the cases to which they are assigned are completed, the United Nations said.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has 16 permanent judges and 12 ad litem judges appointed to sit on specific trials.

Delvoie, 62, most recently was the president of the Brussels Court of Appeal and has worked also as a legal professor, the United Nations said. Morrison, 60, has worked as a judge or magistrate in several countries as well as served as a former defense counsel at the Balkans tribunal. Hall, 61, was elected by the U.N. General Assembly as an ad litem judge at the ICTY in 2005 and was chief justice of the Bahamas since 2001.
