Canadian neighborhood on rat alert

CALGARY, Alberta, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- An official in Calgary, Alberta, says one of the Canadian city's neighborhoods is on alert for rats.

Bylaw boss Bill Bruce said a rat discovered in a northeast Calgary neighborhood last week was killed but there were signs that more rats were in the vicinity, the Calgary Herald said Sunday.

"We've seen evidence of rat activity so we're staying with it until we can confirm there are no others," Bruce said.

Residents of the neighborhood were asked to report rat sightings.

The rat that was captured and killed was a Norway rat, a type that has been known to carry various diseases in addition to damaging buildings and crops, the Herald reported.

Swift Current in Saskatchewan also has a Norway rat problem. The rats were discovered in rural areas in June and attempts to control their population have so far failed , The Globe and Mail said.
