Art student faked suicide attempt

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- An art student who faked a suicide attempt as part of a school project has been fined $3,500 by a Swedish court, officials in Stockholm said.

Anna Odell was convicted of violent resistance and fraudulent practice for attempting to jump off Stockholm's Liljeholmen bridge Jan. 21, The Local reported Monday.

After her arrest, Odell, who has a history of mental illness, was admitted to a psychiatric ward where she revealed the suicide attempt had been faked as part of her final exam at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, court records said.

Odell's project, meant to expose weaknesses in Sweden's psychiatric care, garnered widespread attention from art critics, The Local said.
