Tornado causes damage to N.Y. town

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- An embedded tornado -- one contained in the clouds and rain of a thunderstorm -- touched down on Canandaigua, N.Y., the National Weather Service said.

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported the EF1 category tornado caused serious damage Saturday, felling trees and telephone poles, and destroying some boats harbored at Canandaigua Yacht Club.

The tornado was 50 yards wide and had wind speeds of about 90 mph, Tom Niziol, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo, said.

The region has been affected by at least three tornadoes this summer.
