BEIJING, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- China's National Day celebration rehearsal in Tiananmen Square drew a large crowd of spectators, celebration officials reported.

The rehearsal began Saturday and was held at night to avoid inconveniencing the public, an official with the Beijing municipal government's 60th National Day celebration preparation committee said, Xinhua reported.

The National Day celebration, scheduled for Oct. 1 is planned to commemorate the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the news service reported.

The rehearsal involved almost 200,000 Chinese citizens, a military review, 12,000 performers and 60 float prototypes, the news service said.
