Rail service out after Michigan fire

HAMTRAMCK, Mich., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Rail service was shut down between Detroit and Pontiac, Mich., Friday because of a major fire at a Sterling Oil & Gas subsidiary, authorities said.

All passenter and cargo rail service between the two cities was affected, The Detroit Free Press reported.

The fire in Hamtramck Thursday appeared to have started among gasoline and diesel fuel storage tanks, but an official cause had yet to be determined.

The Detroit News said no one was hurt in the fire, but nearly 800 people were evacuated as a precaution.

Environmental Protection Agency onsite coordinator Brian Kelly said area residents were in no danger from fallout of the fire.

The fire was eventually controlled through the use of a foam fire retardant brought in from a Marathon Petroleum Co. refinery in Detroit.
