Cemetery suspected of reusing graves

CHICAGO, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Another cemetery in suburban Chicago is being investigated for possible grave desecration, a state of Illinois official says.

Secretary Brent Adams of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations says the state has received "credible information" that multiple bodies are buried in single graves at Mount Hope Cemetery in unincorporated Cook County, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Adams says he wrote to the state comptroller asking him to investigate Mount Hope.

Allegations that as many as four bodies are being placed in single graves at Mount Hope surfaced during a hearing of the governor's cemetery task force, the Tribune says.

The task force was told that undercover sheriff's police were offered burials for $700 in cash after cemetery staff said the facility doesn't accept checks or credit cards.

The governor's task force was established to investigate the burial industry in the wake of a scandal at Burr Oak Cemetery near Alsip, Ill., where scores of graves were found to have been dug up and resold.
