Two charged with hate crime in Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Two more suspects have been arrested in the alleged hate-crime beating of an Ecuadoran man on Long Island, police announced.

Curt Hatton, 19, Islip, and Matthew Mint, 16, Patchogue, were charged with third-degree assault as a hate crime in the incident in which an anti-Hispanic epithet allegedly was used.

Ramon Rodriguez, 20, also of Patchogue, was charged previously in the incident, which took place on a street in Patchogue.

Newsday reported Wednesday that the alleged assault sparked a federal investigation into crimes involving racial bias in Suffolk County.
