Taiwan typhoon death toll rises to 461

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Morakot, the most devastating typhoon to hit Taiwan in decades, killed at least 461 people and left another 192 missing, new toll figures showed.

The storm, which lashed the island nation Aug. 8, set off flooding and massive landslides that buried several villages, largely in the southern sections where most of the deaths occurred.

Taiwan's disaster control center said the latest death toll was current as of Tuesday evening, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Another 46 were injured in the typhoon.

Authorities said Kaohsiung County was the worst affected with 392 deaths. Agricultural and other damage to the nation from the storm was estimated at about $440 million.
