Student sent home for anti-Islam T-shirt

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A school district spokeswoman in Gainesville, Fla., says an area elementary school student was sent home for wearing an anti-Islam T-shirt.

School district spokeswoman Jackie Johnson confirmed an unidentified student at Talbot Elementary School violated the district's dress code Monday by wearing a T-shirt stating "Islam is of the devil," The Gainesville Sun reported.

School district dress code forbids students from wearing any clothing that could be deemed disruptive or offensive.

The appearance of the anti-Islam message on the first day of school Monday came a month after the Dove World Outreach Center posted a sign stating "Islam is of the devil" on the local church's property, the Sun said.

The New Testament church's message attracted protesters.

School district officials would not confirm the child who wore the anti-Islam T-shirt was a member of the congregation.
