Russia, U.S. undecided on observation site

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Russian Chief of Staff Gen. Nikolai Makarov said Wednesday his country and the United States are undecided on a joint site to monitor rocket launches.

Appearing at a news conference in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, Makarov said the two countries have not determined where their joint control point to observe foreign countries' rocket launches will be, RIA Novosti reported.

"The issue of creating a joint control point to observe rocket launches and to inform one another of unsanctioned launches is being discussed," Makarov said.

The concept for a Center for Information Exchange involving Russia and the United States was a point of discussion in July in Moscow talks between U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Makarov said Moscow remains a possible site for the proposed center, which would also determine any potential threats posed by other countries' rocket launches.

"We haven't set a date (to create the center). We need to decide on the location, and then we will talk about a date," the chief of staff added.
