BAGHDAD, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Iraq withdrew its ambassador Tuesday from Syria after demanding the government hand over suspects in bombings last week in Baghdad.

Syria responded by recalling its ambassador to Iraq, CNN reported.

The Iraqi government also demanded Syria expel "terrorist organizations that use Syria as a headquarters and launch pad to plan terrorist operations against the Iraqi people," the Syrian news agency SANA reported. Ali al-Dabbagh, a spokesman for the Iraqi government, said Syria should hand over anyone sought by the Iraqi judiciary.

The Islamic State of Iraq, affiliated with al-Qaida, has taken responsibility for the bombings, which killed more than 100 people.
