COLUMBIA, Md., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- One elderly man was charged Monday will killing another resident at a Columbia, Md., assisted living community, Howard County police said.

Earl Lafayette Wilder, 87, was charged with second-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault in an attack against James W. Brown, 91. The attack occurred last week and Brown died Saturday of head trauma after being under hospice care for several days, The Baltimore Sun reported Monday.

Police said they received a call at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 that Wilder had begun striking Brown in the head and that staff had intervened at the Harmony Hall assisted living home.

Investigators called the attack unprovoked and said they didn't believe the two men knew each other.

Wilder was evaluated at Howard County General Hospital after the attack and was being held at an undisclosed facility.
